Forced To Give Up A Passion

Anyone who knows me knows that I LOVE food more than most people do. I love the way it looks, the way it smells, the way it tastes, the way it feels, etc, etc. It's amazing to me that my passion for food has not led me to obesity. I guess I have been blessed with my mother's super fast metabolism. It has slowed down as I've gotten older, but when I've noticed the pants were getting tight I would just work out more so I could eat the same.

Well, recently I found out that I have an ulcer as well as some other stomach problems. I have been placed on a very restricted diet, and by very restricted, I mean there are more things on the "can't eat" list than there are on the "can eat" list. I have done pretty good sticking to the lists. Two things I haven't given up that I'm supposed to are coffee and cigarettes. But, I have cut down, less than 6 ounces of coffee a day, and a few smokes.

The breaking point came yesterday when the Girl Scout cookies I had ordered came in, and I realized that I couldn't eat any. I wanted to cry. Then I got this overwhelming craving for In-N-Out Burger. When Dave got home I told him that I really (X about 15) wanted to go there for dinner. He of course, looking out for my well-being, said he didn't think it was a good idea. At that point I threw the cookies at him and said, "Fine! Enjoy your frickin' cookies!" Then we went to In-N-Out for dinner.

I promised Dave I wouldn't complain if I was in pain later, so I won't tell you how I felt after eating the burger, but I will say that it was worth it!

I know we all have to give up things now and then, The Sentimental Sasquatch is saying "So Long to Donuts." So I was just wondering, what passion have you had to give up, or revise, and how did you get through it?

I quit smoking about 10 years ago for 2 years. I was on Zyban for a week and never wanted another ciggie until we moved here and I got really stressed out and homesick. Then I started again.

Keep your chin up. Once you get accustomed to your new way of eating (notice I didn't say diet) then you can cheat every once in a while without paying so dearly for it.

I am assuming that beer is on your no-no list. I'm sorry. I'll have a few for you tonight.

I hope you're feeling better soon!

Sorry to hear your news. Glad to hear you didn't have to give up your motorcycle!

BB, I know what your going through. I had a serious ulcer several years ago, and nothing's worse than eating something really good and then writing in pain afterword. Been there, done that. Yogurt became my best friend.

For me it became easier, when I realized the "Can't have" foods hurt and the "can have" ones didn't. Pain is very motivating! Hang in there, it won't last forever.

The nice thing about riding is, it will help you with your stress level and you can't eat it. LOL!

Ann- The only thing that's harder for me to give up than food is the smokes. I quit when I was trying to get pregnate and then the whole time I was and then while nursing. I think all together it was almost three years, and then I got divorced and it all went down the tube. :(
Yes, beer is on my no-no list, but thanks for having some for me. :)

Jay- That would be awful. If that happened I would be too devastated to even write about it.

Lady R- You are right, pain is very motivating. Thanks for the encouraging words.

Baron- Thanks!

Turns out you didn't have to give up In-N-Out either! Well...sort of. But I'd rather ride with grapes in my hand than not ride with the best hamburger ever!

Sorry to hear you are having pain. I know what it's like. I had an ulcer once. A diet of a pot of strong black coffee every day on an empty stomach, and Advil quite often for allergy sinus headache relief, and the stress of everyday life and work. Not to mention I'm a chocoholic, and love to drink alcohol too. I had to give it all up for minimum two weeks, and go on antacid pills, plus a very restricted diet. After about three weeks I was able to go back to all the same old stuff, but in moderation. Have been fine ever since. That was about 2 years ago.

You too will get over this. Hang in there!

I could not give up spicy hot foods.
If it gave me an ulcer, though, that would be upsetting.

On another note, I went cold turkey w/o a motorcycle for 10 years, but have again become a regular consumer ... of rides.

I thought you were kidding when you threw the cookies across the room...until I looked at your face. It was heartbreaking.

It's all good girl. You still like "In & Out" and that's a good thing!

I'll even eat your crappy bland food with you. Maybe it will help me get off a few pounds.

Oh, that sucks. I'm sorry you are in pain. In there with you though. The best diet I ever did was bing and purge. I would just eat all the crap I wanted to. Then, I would have Dave show we that hairy ass and I would puke it all up. I was thin for a while, until Dave moved away. Good luck

Ms. BB: That made me laugh. No not the ulcer thing, but throwing the cookies at Dave. I avoid the doctor like the plague. I just know better then to show up on his door step. I would walk out with so many broken, worn out, over used, under used things that I would think life was over as I knew it. But then I would hop on Whiskey and go for a ride and forget about it in ten minutes. So in the end it would just be a waste of money :)

Hope you get back to normal quickly.

Rick- Very well said!

Mr. M.- Thanks for the encouraging words. I was talking to my doctor and he said after awhile I can slowly re-introduce certain things to my diet, in moderation, but that I better not go back to the way I was eating before.

Jeff- I'm glad that you're back on a bike!

Dave- :) Sorry about the cookies.

Masterchief- LMAO! Hope the donut drought is going okay for you!

Fasthair- I hear ya! I try not to go to the doctor, especially since I have no insurance, but at first I thought it was my appendix and didn't want to take any chances.
